In 1742 William Hebb built his home on the shores of the Potomac in St. Mary's County, Maryland when he returned from servering under Admiral Edward Vernon in the Battle of Porto Bello and named the house for the battle and his son, Vernon. His comrade in arms Lawrence Washington named his home Mt. Vernon to honor the admiral. Here it is restored in 1992 and in 1960. Martha Washington's spoonbread was served to guests.
The home was sold in 1812 when Vernon's widow, Anne, moved to Baltimore with her daughter. In 1912 her great-grandson Titian began the next Potomac resort 29 miles up river at Potomac Beach on the Virginia side where he entertained Steven Early and Kate Smith. His daughter, Mary, built Bandy's Bar and Grill 57 miles north in Potomac, Maryland in 1961 and on to Barnegat Light, New Jersey and Sumerland Key, Florida and finally to Leucadia, California.
